Background to College

What is a Sixth Form College?

Longley Park Sixth Form College is a brand new college for North Sheffield. There are about 100 sixth form colleges all over England. All of them focus on giving top quality education to students who are mostly between 16 and 19 years old. Because they are specialist colleges, they are able to provide an outstanding range of courses and specialist services aimed specifically at this age group. Although the colleges have developed in different ways, they all share a reputation for good results, strong relationships between staff and students and outstanding support services. Longley Park SFC will build on this tradition and with us you will be able to access world class post-16 education in your local community.

Some Key Facts:
Four Students

A sixth form college is a stepping-stone between school and work or university. It is very different from school, but you still get lots of support and are not left on your own to sink or swim. You won’t have timetabled classes every hour of the college day and will need to develop independent study skills to make the most of your time. The college has invested heavily in specialist IT and other equipment to help you do this.

There is no uniform and teachers and students are on first-name terms. This reflects the partnership that is at the heart of all the work we do together. One of the ways we check out the effectiveness of this partnership is by listening to students. One student will be elected as a Student Governor and he or she will have exactly the same responsibilities for the development of the college as other Governors. We will also have Student Voice sessions where you can give us feedback about the way the college and courses are run.

Parents and guardians are also a vital part of this partnership. Their help and support can be vital to success and we will keep them fully informed about your achievements and progress and talk to them directly if things begin to go wrong and we can’t sort them out with you.
