EMA: Educational Maintenance Allowance

If you are 16 years of age, with a household income of less than £30,000 a year and about to embark on a full time course at school or college you can apply for an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA).

The EMA is a weekly payment of up £30. It is paid in addition to other support and benefits provided by the Government. What’s more, your family won’t lose out on other money if you get an EMA.

To be eligible for EMA you must attend all your lessons and work to the best of your ability in your programme of study. You could also get bonuses of up to £200 a year if you work hard and meet targets set by your Progress Tutor.

The EMA goes straight into your bank account and will help towards the cost of getting to college and anything you need once you are there.

You can get further information on EMA by calling the EMA helpline freephone number: 0808 1016219 or visit their web site. Your school, Connexions Service or College’s Student Services will also be able to advise you.

Learner Support Funds

Learner Support funds are available in college to help towards the costs of starting or following your course. These can be paid in addition to EMA. These costs could include:

As this fund is limited, help is targeted at students in greatest need.
