Applied Science BTEC First Diploma

This is a practical, work-related course that will provide you with an understanding of scientific principles and the practical applications of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will develop your laboratory skills and find out about working practices in related areas such as forensic science, food technology, analytical science, quality control and environmental science.

Applied Science BTEC National Diploma

The application of science leads to a wide variety of careers and Higher Education opportunities. The courses offered allow you to prepare for a number of options, whilst learning about the practical applications of science and laboratory practice. You will gain an insight into many of the roles of technical work in science, from scientific support at scenes of crime (SOCO) to getting the colours of jelly babies right, from keeping the water we drink safe to the diagnosis of diseases.

Forensic Science

In addition to the Science core you will study the work of the Forensic Science Service and other related agencies like the Police and Fire Services. You will learn how to take and analyse fingerprints, how DNA evidence is gathered and used, gain an insight into how psychologists profile criminals, and how pathologists determine time of death. This is a 3 A Level equivalent course.

Medical Science

In addition to the science core you will study clinical areas of science technical work. You will learn about the nature, causal and diagnostic factors of disease from those caused by microbes to conditions associated with genetic mutations. You will also gain an insight into the field of genetic engineering and opportunities and dangers it opens up for us. This 3 A Level equivalent course is taken within the Applied Science suite.

Art and Design BTEC First Diploma

This is a one year practical course for students keen to study art and design. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in 2D areas such as drawing, photography and painting and 3D areas such as modelling and product design. You will learn by completing projects which allow you to learn new skills and explore your own ideas using a range of art and design media.

You will have access to excellent facilities, including studio space, workshops, specialist art and design resources and materials, digital imaging and the latest in IT.

Art and Design AS/A2

The work of artists and designers is everywhere in our world. Everything, from the buildings we live in to the mug we drink from, has been created by an artist or designer. This subject will appeal to students thinking of specialising in Art and Design, or who want to broaden their timetable and develop a personal interest.

You will express your ideas through drawing, painting, craft, design and printmaking. The emphasis is on practical work and the development of your own portfolio, but you will also gain an understanding of the role art has played in history as well as in society today through visits to galleries, working with practising artists and your own independent research.
