History Teacher becomes Published Author  [27th November 09]

Book ImageAlan Gillingham the Teacher of History at Longley Park became a published author this month when the AQA AS history textbook on Anti-Semitism, Hitler and the German People, which he has co-written was published by Nelson Thorne. The book is designed as study aid and classroom textbook to accompany the AS history Module Anti-Semitism, Hitler and the German people, 1919-45 for which Alan is the Principal Examiner.

The module looks at levels of Anti-Semitism in Germany and elsewhere in Europe and looks at the themes of racism and discrimination. The stages of persecution up to and including the Holocaust are examined with students looking at the responsibility of different individuals and groups. Alan teaches the module at Longley Park and believes that it is a hugely significant piece of European history and that it helps students understand the need to stand against discrimination and bigotry.

German Exchange Programme  [8th September 09]

German ExchangeThe second leg of the German exchange programme took place in July at the end of the summer term. Fifteen German students and their teacher spent 10 days in Sheffield. The programme included a walk in the Peak District, a student guided tour of Sheffield City Centre, three days spent in College participating in a wide range of classes, including Music, Dance, Art, German/English and Spanish.

The group also participated in the Longley Park trip to Durham, Hadrian’s Wall and York, staying overnight at the youth hostel in Northumberland. The trip was a very positive experience for all concerned. On the last day of the exchange there were some tearful scenes as students said goodbye. There was a very upbeat feel to the exchange and some lasting friendships have been formed.

Local Author Visits Longley Park Sixth Form College  [24th April 09]

Local author, Kate Hanney, whose first book ‘Safe’ has recently been published, will be visiting Longley Park Sixth Form College on 29th April 2009.

Kate has worked as an English teacher in South Yorkshire Schools for the past ten years and wrote ‘Safe’ to reflect the reality of how many teenagers, branded ‘hoodies’ and ‘youths’ by the media, actually live.

The book particularly appeals to teenage boys. “Parents were telling me that their teenage sons who never read anything were sitting and reading chapters at a time without losing concentration” says Kate.

On her visit to the College, Kate will be working with English Classes who are currently studying her book. She will also meet students and sign copies of her book in the College’s Learning Resource Centre.

Copies of ‘Safe’ are available to buy online and in Waterstones, Sheffield.
