The Career Ready programme (formally Careers Academy UK) is an amazing and unique experience for Longley Park Sixth Form College students – and we are the only provider in South Yorkshire to offer it!

Career Ready is for students studying Business, Creative Arts or STEM subjects at Level 3. Students must also have good GCSE grades. Four elements make up the Career Ready programme; none of these are stand alone and you will take part in all of them.

Mentor – you will have your own personal business mentor who is committed to supporting you and will give you an insight into the professional world of work. You will meet with your mentor regularly and they will help you to formulate a career plan, identify the skills and qualities needed in order to increase your employment or higher education chances.

Workplace visits – You will take part in workplace visits and visit various employers who will give you a chance to find out what it is like to work in their firm and you will gain an opportunity to speak with people who work there, all the time expanding your own network of contacts who can help you navigate your career choices.  This year students will visit businesses such as BBC Radio Sheffield, Mondelez, TATA Steel, JRI Orthopaedics, Santander and Yorkshire Bank to name just a few. In the past Business students have also had the opportunity to visit Barcelona, Madrid, Prague and Frankfurt.

Masterclasses – You will attend Masterclasses both in College and on business premises; these are delivered by employer volunteers who want to share their experiences with you. You will take part in sessions such as effective networking and communication, interview skills and preparation for work – the result will be a more confident, work ready you!

Internships and Work Placements – Over the duration of the programme, you will have the opportunity to experience four weeks of work placements. You can do this in one week blocks, but most will complete their placement in a four week block during the summer holidays; some students compete for one of the sought after four week Career Ready paid internships with some of the larger companies like Santander, Yorkshire Bank and Barclays. The experience you gain will be invaluable and will put you way ahead of other College students.

You will also be involved in helping to plan events for students and business people throughout your two years at Longley Park. This will give you invaluable experience and be an additional bonus to your CV and personal statement.

A major part of Career Ready is attending the Capital Experience event in London which takes place in November. You will come together with other Career Ready students from right across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland at the Dominion Theatre in London and you will visit an employer in London and meet people working there in order to get a better understanding of what that company does and you will have an opportunity to network.

Towards the end of you two-year course you will end your Career Ready experience with a Graduation Ceremony. This will be attended by your mentor, internship supervisor and your family. It is a formal event and past ceremonies have been held at Manchester City Hall and the Leeds Armouries. We provide transport for you and your family to this event.  The final Career Ready event will be a meal in a restaurant with all Career Ready students and staff plus many business people.

To become part of the Career Ready Programme you must show that you are a hard working student with great interpersonal skills such as good organisation, punctuality, attendance and be able to display that you can be conscientious and motivated at all times We take a maximum of 20 students per year in each area and to gain a place on it, you will be invited to complete an application form, this will be assessed by local business people involved with Career Ready, you will then be invited to have an interview, this again will be with a local business person.

Most of our Career Ready students have progressed on to University and their Career Ready experience has greatly enhanced their personal statement giving them an advantage over other students in gaining places. Overall the Career Ready programme is a fantastic experience for any students fortunate enough to be accepted, it requires hard work, dedication and good organisational skills but the benefits are worth it!
