Our Curriculum and 16-19 Requirements

All students follow a study programme which includes:

  • Main qualification(s) which provide progression to the next level of study, training or employment
  • Additional activities to develop personal skills, confidence and employability
  • Academic Tutorial to provide individual career planning, skills development and access to additional opportunities
  • Maths and English qualifications at the right level to support main programmes and progression
  • Extra support (financial, wellbeing, study skills) to meet individual need

 

The curriculum at Longley Park Sixth Form has been specifically designed to ensure a motivating learning experience that meets the needs of all students. We offer programmes at Levels 1, 2 and 3 and support students with progression to University, further training and employment. The majority students are enrolled on a Level 3 main programme, with around 20% on a Level 2 or 1 programme. A high proportion of students study English and/or Maths at a lower level alongside their main programme.

Longley Park offers a wide range of Post 16 A Level and Level 3 Applied General qualifications. Th breadth of our offer allows young people to blend A Level and Applied General programmes to create a desired course combination matched to their future aspirations.

Level 2 Diplomas and Certificates

Our range of Level 2 qualifications offer a solid foundation in key subject areas and are designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress to Level 3 or to pursue further training or employment. Level 2 courses offer more subject choice and focus on more sector-specific skills and knowledge. Students improve their confidence in academic study as well as engaging in more demanding work-related learning, including work placements and practical assessments such as organising events and fundraising. Courses include units relating to employment as well as developing the study skills required for progression to Level 3.

Level 1 Diplomas

Longley Park Sixth Form offers pathways at Level 1 for students who leave school with few or no qualifications, including a full time ESOL programme for students whose level of English means they would be unable to access other courses. At the end of the one year ESOL programme young people may progress to another Level 1 course or to a Level 2 programme while continuing to access part time ESOL support.

Level 1 courses have an emphasis on personal development, building confidence in team work and problem-solving and setting the foundations for further study. Students on Level 1 courses are also introduced to the skills and attributes needed for the workplace. All students on Level 1 programmes study English and Maths qualifications to support their main programme and progression.

Level 1 courses include common workskills units but allow for a degree of specialisation based on student interest and aspiration. Current pathways are:

  • Health and Childcare
  • Business and IT (vocational pathway)
  • Sport and Personal Development
  • Visual Arts and Creative Media (UAL)

 

GCSEs, ESOL and Functional Skills

Our aim is to support students to achieve the vital passport qualifications in English, Maths and Science which are so important to employers and universities. Some students may take a GCSE in one or two years or may choose work towards this by taking other qualifications along the way. The current offer includes Biology, English and Mathematics
